Primary Boot Camp: Get Reading Right

Morning all,

Many thanks to staff who came to the Get Reading Right Boot Camp yesterday. Below is an outline of what was shared:

  • Introduction to Get Reading Right (GRR) and the features of this synthetic phonics programme
  • The 3 toolkits
  • Games and resources available
  • Tips to get started

GRR is an excellent resource and tool for students of all year levels and supports teachers in differentiating their spelling programme for the various levels we have in our classes. It is not just a programme we implement in lower primary. This resource supports the development of phonics, fluency and vocabulary building to support both decoding and encoding as well as developing reading comprehension in a systematic format.  We have a number of resources available that can support students across Years 1-6.

GRR resources are available in hardcopy but also on the server (see pathway below). We also have many resources in the ERC.

smb://10.4.1.11/Teachers/@Teachers Pub/@PRIMARY/Curriculum/Literacy/Reading/Get Reading Right – All

Here you will find:

  • All toolkits (synthetic toolkits)
  • Take aways (worksheets)
  • Powerpoint lessons a great way to get started as you become familiar with using the resources
  • Game templates

For those teachers that are not familiar with the toolkits and would like to know more information, please let me know. I am happy to come and speak with year level teams during planning meetings as well if you would like a refresher of what resources are available.

Professional Development- ESL In The Mainstream 2018

Dear Teachers,

Last year around  17 of our ECE and Primary teachers were trained in two ESL courses offered for staff – Teaching Young Children in English in a Multilingual Context (ECE and Lower Primary) & ESL in the Mainstream Class (Middle – Upper Primary).  These courses are designed to provide opportunities for all teachers to develop an understanding of how better to support the needs of second language learners in their teaching.

All teachers are expected to have this course completed after two years of employment at YCIS. It involves making the commitment to attend 7-10 lessons with tasks and readings to complete at the end of each module. Some tasks require you to reflect on your teaching and/or the reading(s) provided, while other tasks involve you trialing strategies learned with your students in class.  More importantly, it is an excellent course for teachers who teach second language children in their classrooms, which are all teachers at YCIS.  The course costs, including course booklets and snacks, are covered by the school.

The course has been taken by a number of Chinese teachers in the past and the concepts and strategies taught are relevant for any language.  We encourage Chinese teachers to also take the course and use this for their own professional learning.

Now, all you need to do is sign up and participate! Please email our course tutors – Melissa or Andrea to register for either of these courses.  The deadline to inform them of your interest in attending will be Friday, December 8th.

Please see the attached overview of the 2 courses being offered-

PLC – Sign-Up (ECE & Primary)

Professional Learning Communities 2017-18

There are many definitions of PLCs, although I find the one written below by Richard DuFour explains it very clearly and concisely:

A professional Learning Community “is an ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective enquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve…PLCs operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous, job embedded learning for educators”.

– DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, Many, & Mattos, Learning by doing (2016), p11

The main aims of PLCs at YCIS are:

  • to provide opportunities for professional growth amongst the staff;
  • to improve the teaching and learning in school
  • to provide an avenue to attain our school-wide goals

Amita has created a shared document in which teachers can input their choices of PLC that they wish to join. Please click on this following link:

goo.gl/Myc5hC

I have already inputted teachers who have expressed an interest in attending specific PLCs, although please check to make sure I have not missed anyone out (apologies if I have!). For those of you who have yet to express an interest, please input your preferences in the chart. We will be discussing this at a CLT meeting on Tuesday afternoon, and so if you could input your preferences by then, that would be great (it will only take a couple of minutes to input your choices). You will need to click on ‘Edit in browser’ to add your name, and 1st/2nd preferences. It will save automatically.

To aid you with your selection, please see the chart below, which lists each PLC, and includes the school-wide goal that it relates to. Each PLC should also have a ‘research’ component, with the aim of generating collaborative discussions regarding best/informed practice.

Some points to note:

  • For Primary teachers, we are mainly looking for teachers to join the Curriculum PLCs (shaded in blue on the chart). There will only be a couple of places for teachers in the working groups (shaded in orange), as these will be during the school day and will consist mainly of CLT members.
  • Please check the left-hand column on the chart below to identify which section the PLCs relate to (ECE, Primary or both)
  • Technology PLC members have already been assigned as of last year.
  • It would be great if each team/year level has representatives in as many different PLCs as possible, as this would certainly help with vertical alignment.
  • We will try hard for teachers to get one of their PLC choices…however, it may not always be possible if there is an imbalance of participants between PLCs.

Please let me know if your have an questions,

Rob

Teaching Young Children in a Multilingual Context in English & ESL In the Mainstream

Morning All,

As we wrap up our busy year, we would like to acknowledge and congratulate the teachers that participated in our ESL Courses this year. Both courses are highly interactive and engage participants in various activities that guide them in reflecting on their pedagogy. This year Andrea and I have been amazed at the contributions of all participants as they have come to class prepared to share and reflect on their teaching practices.

We would like to congratulate the following staff members on the completion or participation in the course.

Afternoon PD Sessions

Choose your 2 sessions

This workshop will be about boys’ attainment in reading. It will look at the gender gap between boys and girls in reading from lower Primary up to Secondary, why such a gaps exists, how it affects our students and what we can do about it in the classroom. Teachers will be given practical examples of what they can do to help boys and all students be enthusiastic about reading and improve their reading levels.
Explicitly teaching metacognitive reading comprehension strategies has many advantages for developing readers. One of those advantages is that we can use students' responses to these strategies in reading conferences to assess their reading level, nudge them toward new reading possibilities, and to celebrate growth. In this session, teachers will first be given resources to implement reading comprehension strategies in guided reading. We will then go over how to lead effective reading conferences by looking at example conference scripts, watching reading conferences, and practising conferring with each other.

Choose your sessions

In this session, we’ll focus on how to get the most out of small group reading instruction. We’ll look at what to teach and how to teach it effectively. Discussions will focus on the importance of assessment, the structure of guided reading sessions, the skills and strategies we should teach, and some example lessons. At the very least, teachers will walk away with a reminder about what good practice looks like in guided reading.
One of the challenges for teachers is not simply getting students to read – it’s getting them to enjoy reading also. It is one thing for students to read through a text in class but will they open another book when they get home. Research has shown that reading enjoyment is much more important for children’s educational success than previously thought. Before we teach children to read it is important to get children of all ages excited by and interested in books and reading. In this session, teachers will be shown ideas and strategies to help them instil a love of reading in their students and ideas to make the classroom a reading friendly environment.

Semester 2B – Optional PD

Dear All,

Looking ahead to Semester 2B, we would like to continue to offer our Optional PD sessions for ECE and Primary. We have a few sessions already planned, however would like to see if there are any other teachers who would like to offer a mini workshop.

If you have been on a PD this year or have knowledge and a passion for a specific area that you would like to share, we invite you to email or come and talk to Sissy or myself. At this point you don’t need to have the workshop planned, just a proposed idea would be enough.

By knowing how many workshops we have, we are able to schedule these in for the remainder of the year including our next Teacher In-service Day coming up in April. Please email us by the end of next week, Friday Feb. 24, with your proposal. As we need to plan for the rest of the year, please ensure that you are able to contact us by the deadline.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Melissa & Sissy

Special Staff Meeting next Wednesday (ECE and Primary)

Dear Colleagues,

We hope you had a great holiday and have settled back into the new semester.

We wanted to alert you to the ECE and Primary Staff Meeting next week, as it will finish later than usual.   As you know, child protection is one of our major focus areas for this academic year.  At the staff meeting on Wednesday, we will be updating you on our Child Protection progress and plans, and then will start the first module of our Child Protection training, using EduCare.  It is extremely important that you have received your log in and that you can access the system.   You can work with someone else on theirs, but if you don’t do it yourself with your own account, you will not receive the certificate.  These certificates will be very helpful and most of the new teachers we are hiring from the UK and elsewhere have had child protection training.  If you have not been able to log in to the system, please ask Jenni Wang for help.

As we discussed at an earlier staff meeting, you will be asked to complete the remaining 4 modules of the course in your own time.  This will take 3-4 hours and as a result we will not ask you to come into school on Saturday morning, January 21, which was originally scheduled as a half day PD day.  You are welcome to complete the course in small groups, teams or individually, but each of you will need to complete the module quizzes using your own account to receive the certificate of completion.  We would like everyone to have the course finished by the end of March.  More information will be provided at the staff meeting.

The staff meeting will be for all ECE and Primary staff, starting at 4:00pm on Wednesday, January 11.  Librarians and Judy are also asked to attend.  We will start in the RP Auditorium, and snacks will be available from 3:45pm.  After the initial presentation, you will be divided into groups for the first module.  Depending on how long it takes your group, the meeting could go as late at 5:30pm.

Thank you very much for your support with our Child Protection work.

We wish you all an enjoyable weekend.

Damien and Mary

ESL Course

Dear Teachers,

Last year around 25 of our ECE and Primary teachers were trained in two ESL courses offered for staff – Teaching Young Children in English in a Multilingual Context (ECE and Lower Primary) & ESL in the Mainstream Class (Middle – Upper Primary).  These courses are designed to provide opportunities for all teachers to develop an understanding of how better to support the needs of second language learners in their teaching.

Over time, we would like as many of our staff to be trained as possible.  It is a big commitment as it involves 7-10 lessons with tasks and readings to complete at the end of each module. Some tasks require you to reflect on your teaching and/or the reading(s) provided, while other tasks involve you trialing strategies learned with your students in class.  More importantly, it is an excellent course for teachers who teach second language children in their classrooms, which are all teachers at YCIS.  The good news is that the course costs, including course booklets and snacks, are covered by the school. Now, all you need to do is sign up and participate. This is a priority and all teachers are expected to have this course completed after two years of employment at YCIS.

The course has been taken by a number of Chinese teachers in the past and the concepts and strategies taught are relevant for any language.  We would encourage Chinese teachers to also take the course and use this for their own professional learning.

If you are interested in signing up, please inform Melissa or Andrea.  The deadline to inform them of your interest in attending a course will be Wednesday, December 7th.  Please see the attached overview of the 2 courses being offered –
