Getting to the root: How the word gratefulness is derived: Gratefulness has its roots in the latin words gratus meaning “pleasing” and the verb facere which means “to make or do” to create the word gratificus – “doing a kindness”. Can you see how being grateful is the kind way to be?

Y3-6: Find hidden word: students are to make as many words from the letters found in GRATEFULNESS. You can run this as team competition giving a time limit. You can also do it in rounds like find as many 2 letters, 3 letters and 4 or more letters. You could also award extra points for teams that come up with unique words only their team came up with: find-as-many-words

History:

All year levels: Andrew Carnegie model of gratefulness. A brief account of the how Andrew Carnegie life was an example of gratefulness. Can lead to a discussion of what we want to be remembered for or what legacy we want to leave behind: andrew-carnegie-model-of-gratefulness

Crafts:

Links of Gratitude– Every day for a week or month, students are to write the name of one person they are grateful for on a strip of paper. They are to make a chain. See how long their chain will be at the end of the period. links-of-gratitude

Gratefulness Tree– Students draw a tree trunk and braches, then they cut up paper in shapes of leaves. They are to write the name of a person or something they are grateful for gratefulness-tree.
