South Korea (National)

A Guide especially for South Korean National applicants to South Korea

A. Brief Overview

  • Students study in the same curriculum as Korean local students

  • Korean is the method of classroom instruction

  • This specific admission is specially created for Korean students who studied abroad due to their parents foreign workplace and thus cannot be evaluated with Korean local high school students in a same criteria

  • The quota for this admission is much smaller than the quota for Korean local high schools students

  • Admission usually starts in early July (Yet there are some exceptions) see the chart in section D. Screening Process

  • Admission for Korean Nationals has two sections: 12 year merit and 3 year merit

B. Qualification for admission

1. 12 year merit

  • For Korean students who spent all their primary, secondary years abroad (Grade 1~12)

2. 3 year merit

  • For Korean students who spent all 3 or more years (and less than 12 years) abroad

  • One of those years must include year equivalent to one Korean Highschool years  (고1~고3)

  • There are some exceptions ! See E. Exceptions

** Above is merely a rough overview of the qualification.

Specific qualification varies a lot among different universities, so refer to each university’s’ guideline (links below)

C. Qualification for admission: Parent

1. 12 year merit

  • No specific requirement for parent’s sojourn/work

2. 3 year merit

  • This admission quota is created to cover the disadvantage of students who studied abroad due to their parents foreign workplace. Hence, one of the parent’s sojourn with the student is a  requirement

**Again, parent qualification varies a lot among universities as well. Refer to each university’s’ guideline (links below)

D. Screening process

Screening process also varies a lot among universities.

Some universities adopt 100% document- based evaluation(서류 100%), some adopt 100% test-based evaluation(필기 100%), and some use a combination of those(다단계, 일괄합산)

Refer to the chart below for each university’s different screening process

E. Exceptions

  • KAIST(카이스트) university does not have a distinction between 12 and  3 year merit admission. Students who have studied abroad for more than 3 years all apply for the same admission.

  • Seoul National University(서울대) does not accept 3 year merit applicants. There is a quota only for 12 year merit applicants.

  • Korea university (고려대) has 9 year merit admission as well

  • Postech(포스텍) has 2 year merit admission instead of 3

  • Hankuk U of Foreign Studies (한국외대)has 2, 3, 9 year merit admission

F. Important Notes

  • Each university’s screening process/qualification may change each year.[Regular update is necessary]

  • Nowadays, more and more universities are increasing their emphasis on document-based evaluation

    • This is not a bad trend, since you do not have to prepare for Korean style english proficiency, math, and/or Korean literature entrance exam.

    • However, this also means that you have to take extra care in achieving high academic/non-academic document qualifications -> 스펙 (GPA, SAT I&II, AP, TOEFL, ACT, IELTS, extra-curricular activities, inside & outside school awards)

  • If you are an art, music, or PE major applicant, application scheme is quite complicated

    • Because you have to submit/show your tangible performance as a part of an application process

    • Therefore, refer to the guideline below, make sure you are aware of the application process, and prepare accordingly (Actually, this is a comment for all applicants!!! )

G. Detailed guideline

**Please read the guideline of your target university thoroughly.  It contains all the accurate, important information you need to prepare.

**They contain email/phone number of the admission office. Each university has its own distinctive requirement/qualification for admission, so if you have any question or something you are not sure about, please contact the admission office of that specific university to prevent any misunderstandings. Don’t be the one to get disqualified for the admission of your target university at the very end. (IT HAPPENS!!)

**The chart above and the guidelines below are for 2016 admission. There is a possibility that universities change their scheme each year, so I recommend referring to the updated guideline of your admission year as well.
