Happy Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year, which is also known as Spring Festival, is now only a few days away! The Chinese Lunar New Year dates from 2600BC, when the Emperor Huang Di introduced first cycle of the Chinese zodiac. Because of this cyclical lunar dating, the first day of the year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February. On the Chinese calendar, 2018 is the Lunar Year of 4716-4717. On the Western calendar, the start of this Chinese New Year falls on February 5, 2019.

We are entering the Year of the Pig. In Chinese culture, the pig is the first of the domestic animals. It is the symbol of luck and prosperity. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of good fortune.

There is no doubt that the Year of the Pig will be another very exciting year for us at YCIS Puxi.  This includes our ECE students continuing their fun exploring their world whilst the Y1-Y3 Violin Assemblies, Primary and Secondary Chinese Storytelling and the Y5-Y6 Musical will be in full swing all too soon. In April YCIS Puxi will host a fully sanctioned TEDx event. By this time, students from Puxi Secondary will have just returned  from The Hague and the Model United Nations Convention. The Y12 G4 Borneo trip where students are conducting scientific investigations and assisting with the Orangutan Rehabilitation Sanctuary. Of course, the IGCSE and IB exams await our senior students in the coming months. All this together with the challenges and adventures that still lie undiscovered ahead.

We look forward to a year in which our students will continue to grow and mature through life’s experiences and we wish they will all grasp the opportunities afforded to them and enjoy the thrill of well-deserved success after hard work.

We wish all the students, staff and families in our YCIS Puxi community a wonderful and prosperous Year of the Pig!

Showing our Learning in a meaningful way

Year 6 have been learning all about measurement and how to use formulas to calculate a variety of different real-life situations. They have worked in groups to collaboratively create and design their own village and to calculate the measurements and volume of their town.

Congratulations

Our students are quickly adjusting to school life and studying very hard to prepare themselves for the Chinese assessment right after they came back from Christmas Holidays. When the Chinese assessment is finished, Chinese people will celebrate the most important and biggest festival – Chinese New Year. In this happy occasion, we are very proud to share with you two great news.

Firstly, some of YCIS Puxi Primary students recently participated in Shanghai Municipal Education Commission “Chanted Poetry, Beautiful Classics” Performance Competition and their group work “Daydream by the Lotus Pool” won the first prize in primary school groups. The competition has drawn so much attentions among Shanghai’s international schools and 26 international schools have joined in this fierce competition with a total of 118 programs submitted.

Secondly, in the first collection of “Outstanding Work Collection by Yew Chung and Yew Wah Students”, seven Chinese teachers have submitted nine students’ compositions which will be included in this collection. Please see the details below.

2018 has come to an end and let’s make 2019 a successful and splendid year!

2018 Music & Art Mosaic

At YCIS Puxi Primary Hongqiao Campus, on the evening of December 13, 2018, we celebrated our “Music & Art Mosaic” programme which has the theme of “the Music of Kids’ Movies”.
The event combined music, art, Art-Silent Auction and a Christmas Bazaar which sold handicrafts made by our students. The Primary Orchestra, Ensemble, Y3-4 Show Choir, Y5-6 Senior Choir, Pop Dance and Hip-Hop Dance performed on that evening. The winners of the Puxi Secondary “Battle of The Bands 2018-19” Medsin also performed.

The fabulous show with so many performers left a deep impression on every audience. The music staff have shown great skill in producing such high quality work. This high quality element was also evident in the art work of the children which was on display.
All the profits will be donated to ‘BlueSky4Children’ and ‘Seeds of Hope’. Up to now, the donation has reached more than RMB 70,000.
We sincerely thank you for your generosity. Your kindness will make the world a better place.

Year 13 Great Race and Celebration Dinner

In what has become quite a tradition at YCIS Puxi, the Year 13 IB students celebrated the end of a long and stressful semester, racing through the lanes of Tianzifang on a Great Race scavenger hunt.  They had to answer questions about the area, take photos, and collect samples of nougat, candy and other items from the shops around the area. Students also had to sing songs and dance with locals, paint their nails and put on funny make up.  Congratulations to Patrizio EFFENDY, Hiroshi IZUMIYA, Yulia KIRINA, So Yun LEE (Chloe), Lin QI (Lynn), and Christopher YANG for their first place finish!

The evening concluded with an excellent dinner at Lapis Thai, where students were able to reminisce about last year’s trip to Thailand.  It was a good break for them to forget about their work for an evening, while enjoying each other’s company.

Year 12-13 IB Learner Profile Awards

At the end of every semester, teachers and students nominate Year 12-13 students who have demonstrated the IB Learner Profile attributes.  From each year level, one student is then selected to receive an award for each attribute.  This year, we had a record of 70 nominations, making it exceptionally difficult for the committee to select the winners.  If students didn’t receive an award this semester, they will have another chance in the spring!  Congratulations to this semester’s award winners!
