It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas

The children in K4B are really looking forward to celebrating Christmas! We explored with Christmas stickers and have started creating Christmas cards. There was lots of excitement in the air as we met Santa and took photos with him. We then talked about who Santa is and made some Santa craft. The children also had a discussion about how we are missing a tree in the classroom and we decided that we should make a Christmas tree using recycled materials. When Bella saw a huge branch that I was carrying from outdoor play she suggested, “We can make a Christmas tree”. So, we sat down and talked about the shape of the actual tree and how it should look like. The children came up with more ideas as they went on and added some decorations to the tree while constructing it.

Painting with beans, making sweet lotus root and getting harvest in Chinese Studies Classes

Under teacher’s guidance, Year 6 students started their study on the theme of “Chinese traditional health-preserving”. Through learning, students learned the whole grains and the names of nutrients and different beans. They also mastered some knowledge about health regimen.

As a preliminary exploration of the teaching mode of ‘Learning Communities’, four Year 6 Chinese teachers made full preparation before class. They did lesson planning together but prepared separately. Each of them took a separate teaching task to develop. Students had the opportunity to choose the topic of interest to participate in.

After several classes, students showed their strong interests and enthusiasm. They made a lot of elaborate and beautiful paintings with beans. There were naive panda, lively fish, proud rooster and quaint pavilion, which stand vividly. In addition, all students came to school canteen in batches and learned to make sweet lotus root. On the next day, every student smiled when they tasted the sweet lotus root they had made by themselves.

Special Thank You

Christmas is a time for giving and once again this semester, the YCIS community has shown us the generous ways in which they support our charity fundraising events.

On Friday, the 8th of December we had our second annual Music and ART Mosaic with a raffle and a silent auction to benefit Baobei and Seeds of Hope.
We also collected two boxes filled with new toys to support the Boy Scouts with their ‘Toys for Tots’ toy drive to benefit the Heart to Heart organisation.

As you celebrate Christmas with friends and family this year, may you be reminded of the message of joy, hope and peace that Christmas brings.

Thank you for your ongoing support. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a 2018 filled with blessings!

Music and Art Mosaic

On the evening of 8 December 2017, we held the 2nd Music and Arts Mosaic in Hongqiao campus. The charity night was a combination of music, art display and auction, and Christmas bazaar. Despite the cold weather, the warm atmosphere in C gym completely melted the winter.

Junior Ensemble welcomed the guests with their melodies at 6 o’clock. The C lobby was filled with beautiful sounds from piano solos and jazz piano. Everyone could feel the Christmas atmosphere. We set up a dance floor area in the C gym. Professional dancers whirled on the dancing floor with the fabulous music played by our orchestra. With the encouragement of professional dancers, our parents and students also joined in the dancing. When the music of Pop Dance and Street Dance went off, the gym immediately began to heat up. All the children joined them and enjoyed the music and dance. The performance was definitely fantastic.

Our students’ art works were hung on the wall. Every piece of work was creative and colorful. The works came from students’ daily art classes and Co-Curriculum Activities. At least one original work of each Year 3-6 student was displayed. The perfect combination of music, dance and art produced quite a lot masterpieces.

34 pieces of art works from our students and artist in residence were displayed in C lobby. These works were for silent auction. The money raised would be donated to ‘Seeds of Hope’ and “Baobei Foundation’ charities. Other student art works have been printed on practical mugs, fridge stickers and post-it notes for charity sale. These students’ creative works expressed their love and kindness. Our world becomes beautiful when we show love and kindness.

We’d like to express our sincere thanks to students and parents for your great support. Special thanks to all the staff who helped in the smooth running of this event as well.

Looking forward to seeing you next year!

Reminder Regarding Parking at Starlive Plaza

As you are aware, the management of Starlive Plaza across the street kindly offer free parking for our families during student drop-off and pick-up times. We are very grateful to them and to the many parents who follow the directions of Starlive Plaza guards at these times.

Recently there have been reports of some drivers and families refusing to follow the Starlive Plaza parking requirements. This puts the good relationship that our school has built with the company at risk. We therefore remind families to avoid blocking the carpark exit and to follow the directions of Starlive Plaza guards. Starlive Plaza reserves the right to void the free parking coupons of families who do not do so.
