Introducing Isabel XU, our Co-Principal

Ms. Isabel Xu holds a Bachelor degree in Chinese Language and Literature from the East China Normal University and a Bachelor degree in Law from East China University of Political Science and Law.  Prior to joining YCIS, she worked in key public schools in UK and Shanghai. Ms. Xu joined YCIS in 2006 and she was the group leader for CAL, CFL at different year levels. She reached her teaching pinnacle when she attained YCIS Master Teacher status in 2013 for teaching excellence. In 2014, Ms. Xu was appointed as a Co-Principal of the YCIS Gubei campus.

The YCIS/YWIES Executive Board has appointed Ms. Xu as Acting Chinese Co-Principal of HQ Campus for this academic year, concurrent with her role as Chinese Co-Principal of YCIS Gubei Campus.  The YCIS Executive Board has appointed Ms. Xu into this acting dual campus leadership role in the belief that this approach will enhance opportunities for ‘whole of school’ development across key areas of strategic planning, student learning, staff development and community engagement.

Ms. Xu will spend time on both campuses each week, and while at Hongqiao will work closely with Mr. Mellor in supporting the leaders of ECE and Primary sections who will continue to manage the day to day work of their respective teams.

Ms. Xu has a 6-year-old son. She loves travelling, watching films, readings and also different types of cuisine with family at her leisure time.

Taking Temperature at the Campus Gates & Student Washrooms/Toilets

Taking Temperature at the Campus Gates:

  • Regulations require that for 2 weeks after an extended holiday break people entering the Campus in the mornings need to have their Temperature taken
  • This is to help detect any possible illness and so reduce the spread amongst children

Student Washrooms/Toilets:

These washrooms are only for use by students and ‘school ayis’ who may be assisting young children. Parents and visitors are reminded to only use the Adult Washrooms/Toilets in each building. Thank you for helping to keep our children safe.

School Buses & Early Pick-Up Times & After School

School Buses & Early Pick-Up Times:

There are over 470 children (55% of the total number of students) catching 35 school buses each day. This means that the end of the school day is a very busy time.

As such, parents/caregivers please note:

  • For Early Pick-Up, you will need to pick up the child and leave the Campus before 3:00 p.m. as the school buses enter the Campus that time, and our students need to pack their bags and move to the buses during that time.
  • To make sure the students can get on the bus safely, no early pickup is available between 3:00 p.m. to 3:25 p.m. (or until the buses have left the Campus). In an emergency, please contact the school office.
  • Children will only be able to travel on their designated bus route and unfortunately will not be able to change to another bus route to go home with a friend.

After School:

Children are most welcome to use the Oval and Playground with a supervising adult.

Children should be collected from ‘pick-up’ classrooms as soon after 3.25 p.m. as possible and by 3.35 p.m. at the latest.

Once children have safely boarded buses and been collected by parents, staff then have other matters to attend to (meetings, interviews, planning) and are not available to supervise children.

When children have been collected from classrooms by parents (or ayis, drivers) it is very important that these people take full responsibility for the child/ren, their safety and appropriate behaviour.

As such, please note:

  • The out-door playground may be used, but the parent (ayi) needs to supervise the child and make sure they are playing in a safe, fair and quiet way.
  • The field (if not being used for a school activity) may be used, but please make sure the soccer goals are not being damaged by the children.
  • Other areas of the school are not for playing and this includes the ‘blue quad’ in the ‘A’ building, garden areas and inside any of the buildings, including the Gym.

Social Media & Communication with Staff & Gifts to Staff

Social Media:

We live in a world where information is circulated very easily and extremely quickly. On most occasions the electronic mediums of Social Media such as WeChat and Facebook are used in positive ways, but we know how they can also be used negatively and quite destructively.

School communities, like ours, are dynamic places with many things happening each day. You want to know what is happening and will have questions. While Social Media can be helpful for communicating with others, please be very careful with what you post, and we remind you that it is inappropriate to post photos of other children and teachers, or their names

Your help with these matters will be greatly appreciated.

Communication with Staff:

Our Campus is a busy and dynamic community and there are thousands of ‘human interactions’ each day.

As such, there will be times when there will be issues, and mis-understandings.

When you do have a concern, and depending on what this may be, the following people may be contacted:

ECE: please contact: Class Co-teachers; School Office; ECE Coordinators; Parents Relations Office.

Primary: please refer to information in your child’s School Diary.

Please note:

  • We ask that you speak in a polite way to our staff (teachers and office staff)
  • Please do not approach and talk to other children (or their parents) about an issue or incident that has occurred at school, staff will follow up your concerns
  • Before using WeChat (or other social media platforms) to share a concern or issue that has occurred at school, please do speak with teachers/leaders

Gifts to Staff:

It is a Yew Chung Education Foundation policy that staff do not accept gifts of money, money cards and expensive items from parents.

Gifts of food, flowers and small items given at special times of the year, (e.g.: Mid-Autumn Festival and Christmas) and at the end of the school year, are acceptable.

While your generosity is appreciated, please do not put staff in an embarrassing situation by giving them expensive items.
